IGLYO Statement in Support of Budapest Pride

We Stand With Budapest Pride!

All of us at IGLYO are deeply concerned by recent developments in Hungary which place Budapest Pride under threat.

In his annual address to the nation on 22 February 2025, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán directly targeted Budapest Pride, threatening to ensure this year's Pride march would not go ahead. This was followed on 27 February with an announcement that pride “will not take place in a public form”.

When questioned by journalists about this ban, Minister Gergely Gulyás provided little clarity on what this meant, or why the government felt this ban was appropriate.

Our movement has long held concerns about the Hungarian Government's treatment of LGBTQI citizens, and this recent development clearly shows a targeting of our communities in Hungary, endangering us for purely political reasons.

Our Member Budapest Pride is preparing to fight back and stand up to this blatant oppression from the Hungarian state. You can support their fight against erasure by donating and showing solidarity. These funds will help them ensure that they can continue their essential work and can effectively challenge any actions taken against them by the state.

We also urge you to contact your representatives, at a national and European level, to express your dismay at this attack on LGBTQI people in Hungary.

As we see a global attack on LGBTQI rights and people, it is essential that we hold the line. That we do not back down and that we offer solidarity and support to our siblings facing state oppression. More than ever we must work together across national borders to stop the spread of anti-LGBTQI hate.

Budapest Pride has a long history of successfully standing up to attacks from their government, we have no doubt they’ll be successful once again, and our community will celebrate together in Budapest on 28 June 2025 as planned.
