On 7 November at 12:30-14:00 CET, our next IGLYO webinar will look into the reality of being an LGBTQI refugee or asylum seeker in Europe. Queer refugees and asylum seekers encounter discrimination and marginalisation not only due to their status as displaced persons but also because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics. The intersection of these identities can lead to heightened vulnerabilities, including racism, queerphobia, social isolation, legal barriers, and limited access to necessary support services. In particular, the lack of culturally competent mental health care amplifies the mental and emotional toll on LGBTQI refugees.
Through a diverse panel of experts and practitioners, we will explore the everyday challenges faced by LGBTQI refugees and asylum seekers, with a focus on mental health and access to targeted mental health services. The speakers will bring in their expertise and their lived experience to provide an overview of the reality of being an LGBTQI refugee or asylum seeker in Europe today, as well as to showcase and highlight some good practices in terms of inclusivity, highlighting what LGBTQI organisations can do to support queer refugees and asylum seekers in their respective regions.
