About IGLYO

We, IGLYO — The International Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and Intersex Youth and Student Organisation, are the leading youth development and leadership organisation working with LGBTQI young activists. With over 115 Member Organisations situated in 40 countries in the Council of Europe region, we unite a great variety of individual and community experiences. You can learn more about IGLYO at www.iglyo.org.

Research goals

LGBTQI youth in the Council of Europe region hail from diverse ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds. IGLYO is aware of the intertwined realities of racism, LGBTQI-phobia, sexism, classism, ableism, and ageism that are part of the lived experiences of LGBTQI youth of colour. Therefore, we have started our journey to understand several issues concerning racial equality and racial justice in LGBTQI youth activism.

To aid us with this matter, we are looking for a consultant who can conduct qualitative research to explore the experiences of BIPOC* and racialised LGBTQI youth entering activism spaces.

This research aims to assess the barriers that young people encounter when accessing activist spaces and explore how to make these spaces more inclusive for everyone. The consultant should be able to:

  • Assess the needs and barriers experienced by BIPOC and racialised LGBTQI youth when accessing activism and participating in political life.
  • Identify ways to create spaces that foster diversity and inclusion and are accessible for BIPOC and racialised LGBTQI youth.
  • Meet with IGLYO’s Anti-Racism Panel and Policy team to steer this research, as well as with other potential relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide recommendations for youth organisations and LGBTQI organisations in coordination with IGLYO.
  • Identify best practices in this area that could serve as inspiration for civil society organisations.

*BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, (and) People of Color and has been used as a commonplace term to group together diverse and different communities that may not necessarily have anything in common other than a shared yet unique experience of discrimination along ethnic, racial, and/or colonial axis of domination, and that the use of such term isn't meant to erase the richness of racial and ethnic diversity but to refer to individuals and communities affected by racism, colorism, and/or xenophobia when considering large-scale phenomena and structures of power.

Deliverables

The consultant will have to submit the following deliverables:

  1. Detailed work plan of the project, including a timeline for the deliverables in line with the project’s proposed timeline.
  2. Desk research on this topic as a starting point for developing the methodology.
  3. Qualitative methodology proposal (including participants’ description, methods used, data collection and dissemination plan, data analysis foreseen, and ethical considerations)
  4. Transcriptions of all the research methods with
  5. Research report (approximately 20 pages) with recommendations, incorporating IGLYO’s feedback. The report should be finalised by 1 November 2024.

Eligibility Criteria

The consultant should demonstrate that they fulfil the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting qualitative data collection and analysis with LGBTQI communities, racialised communities and/or other marginalised communities
  • Good understanding of the needs of BIPOC and racialised LGBTQI youth and proven record of incorporating an intersectional approach to their research methods.
