About the Conference
Hate speech and hate crime against LGBTQI individuals are rising across Europe, and often young people are the most vulnerable to it. For this reason, IGLYO included in its strategic plan the goal to provide evidence of LGBTQI young people's experience of bias-motivated hate crime, hate speech and violence, and to develop guidelines for appropriate measures of prevention, reporting, and protection.
Between 8 and 13 November 2023, IGLYO and ŠKUC Magnus brought together around 20 young queer activists for four days of discussion, exchange and knowledge building on the topic of hate speech and hate crime against LGBTQI+ youth.
The programme included:
- Informative sessions and panel discussions with experts;
- Group discussions and exchange of knowledge;
- Capacity-building workshops.
Every day ended with a reflection group guided by four young experts of IGLYO Advisory Panel.Furthermore, thanks to the host organisation ŠKUC Magnus, a founding member of IGLYO and the first LGBTQI organisation in Slovenia, participants and IGLYO staff had the opportunity to learn more about the history and present of the LGBTQI movement in the country, and get a glimpse of the queer scene of Ljubljana.
As a result of this Conference, a set of policy guidelines on preventing and tackling hate speech and hate crime against LGBTQI young people will be elaborated by IGLYO in 2024.
A wholehearted thank-you to all the participants, the local organisers of ŠKUC Magnus, and our Advisory Panel for making this Conference a true success and an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
