About

EKVALIS

EKVALIS — Association for Educational Development was founded in December 2017. It works with LGBTIQ+ young people as a specific sub-category of the LGBTIQ+ community. The primary focus of the organisation is to work on facilitating supportive environment for acceptance of LGBTIQ+ identities through education.

Some of their LGBTIQ+ programmes include:

  • A Queer Club — Within the queer club the community is included in co-creating the programme. The focus is mostly on social and networking events, building connections and nurturing the concept of “chosen families “
  • Non-formal education — Summer schools, trainings and youth exchanges that focus on affirmative representation of queer people, building of safe(r) spaces, coalitions and alliances
  • Queer Art and Archiving — Setting up the first exhibition “Queer Love, Legacy and Resistance“ that featured queer couples, individuals and activists who contribute to building a more resilient LGBTIQ+ community in North Macedonia.

Ekvalis is also one of the co-organisers of the Skopje Pride Parade.

Their mission

Ekvalis works in 3 strategic areas:

  1. Youth activism/democratic participation — with a focus on electoral rights, platforms for activist participation (especially with a focus on non-violent action), queer activism and using arts in activism;
  2. Gender/LGBTIQ+ equality — with a focus on advancing the equal access to safe spaces, supportive environment and expression of women and LGBTIQ+ community members with a specific focus on LGBTIQ+ youth;
  3. Media education — Developing skills and strategies, campaigns and alternative narratives for positive representation of LGBTIQ+ communities, but also uncovering disinformation schemes targeting various vulnerable groups and liberal policies.
